The Story Behind the Song "ASHREINU"

In the fall of 1944, in the Auschwitz concentration camp, a group of 50 Hungarian Jewish boys under the age of 18 had been selected for the gas chambers.  They had been told they were to take showers, but this was later in concentration camp history, and the boys knew the truth.

Inside the bathhouse, one boy shouted out, “Brothers! Today is the day of Simchat Torah! Before we die, let us celebrate Simchat Torah one last time!  We don’t have a Torah Scroll to dance with, so let us all dance with God Himself—Who is surely here among us—before we return our souls to Him.”

50 young voices raised in song, and 50 pairs of feet stamped in joy before the L-rd:
Ashreinu mah tov chelkeinu u’ma nayim goraleinu u’mah yafah yerushateinu (How fortunate we are and how wonderful is our portion and how beautiful is our heritage.)

The commandant came and was infuriated.  One boy told him, “leaving a world where Nazi beasts reign is a cause for celebration.”  To teach them a lesson, the commandant had them all pulled out and put in a holding block overnight, telling them he planned to torture them the next day.

The next morning a high-ranking Nazi officer arrived, needing to conscript a large number of workers.  He saw the group of boys and ordered them along with several hundred other inmates, to be transferred to his work camp.  Survivors of Auschwitz report that all 50 boys survived the war.

PSALM 132:13-18
For Adonai has chosen Tziyon, He has wanted it as his home.  "This is my resting-place forever, I will live here because I so much want to.  I will bless it with plenty of meat, I will give its poor their fill of food.  Its cohanim (priests) I will clothe with salvation, and its faithful will shout for joy.  I will make a king sprout there from David's line and prepare a lamp for my Anointed One.  His enemies I will clothe with shame, but on Him there will be a shining crown."

ISAIAH 14:1
For the LORD will have mercy on Jacob and will yet choose Israel and set them in their own land: and the strangers shall be joined with them and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob.

DEUTERONOMY 12:11
Then to the place the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for His Name, there you are to bring everything I command you: your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes and special gifts, and all the choice possessions you have vowed to the Lord.

DEUTERONOMY 12:21
If the place where the Lord your God chooses to put His Name is too far away from you, you may slaughter animals from the herds and flocks the Lord has given you, as I commanded you, and in your own towns you may eat as much of them as you want.

God was known by Abraham, Isaac and Jacob as "El Shaddai" - "Almighty God".  Shaddai means "Almighty" and is typically shown with just the Hebrew letter "Shin".   A topigraphical map of the City of Jerusalem with the Kidron Valley (on the right), the Central Valley or Tyropoeon (Ty-rop-eon) Valley (in the middle) and the Hinnon Valley (on the left) - shows the Hebrew letter "Shin" over the Old City of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount area.

DEUTERONOMY 16:6
But at the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to place his name in, there thou shalt sacrifice the Passover at even, at the going down of the sun, at the season that thou camest forth out of Egypt.

DEUTERONOMY 16:11
And thou shalt rejoice before the LORD thy God, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy manservant, and thy maidservant, and the Levite that is within thy gates, and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, that are among you, in the place which the LORD thy God hath chosen to place his name there.

DEUTERONOMY 12:5
But you are to seek the place the Lord your God will choose from among all your tribes to put his Name there for his dwelling. To that place you must go.

There is a 2nd place where God stamps His Name ...

... On your heart

HEBREWS 8:10 & 12
This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord.
I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts.  I will be their God, and they will be my people.

For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
