Psalm 122:6  Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: may they prosper who love you.

Isaiah 40:1-5
“Comfort, O comfort My people,” says your God.  “Speak kindly to Jerusalem; And call out to her, that her warfare has ended, that her iniquity has been removed, that she has received of the LORD’S hand double for all her sins.”  A voice is calling, “Clear the way for the LORD in the wilderness; make smooth in the desert a highway for our God.   “Let every valley be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; and let the rough ground become a plain, and the rugged terrain a broad valley;  Then the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all flesh will see it together; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

The Time Finally Arrives

January 2011 trip planning meeting at Doug & Lynda's home

Travel From the US to Israel

After 18 months of saving, planning and preparing, the time finally arrived for the long anticipated 2011 Sukkot trip to Israel.  Fifteen folks from Beit Yeshua (Curtis & Carolyn, Doug & Lynda, Paul & Susan, Chuck & Janice, Duke & Myrl, Gid, Gloria & Brittany) joined with Highway To Zion (Cathy, Jeff, Chris) as well as some new friends (Joyce, Rita, Melissa, Danny).

The flight from Charlotte to JFK New York was at 12:50pm but we had to be at the airport at 9:30am.  Everyone was up early that morning to finalize packing, a quick breakfast, our drive to Charlotte, dropping off luggage & parking at the airport and going through security.

Security checks at all the airports were courteous
but still made you feel a little nervous

Everyone got checked it - then it was time to WAIT.

Some read

Gid sang - in the airport
(in Tiberias near the Sea of Galilee, in Jerusalem and at the Garden Tomb)

Myrl, Cathy, Lynda, Janice and Curtis danced

Everyone took lots of photos - including Gloria & Brittany and Duke

About 11:00 everyone started getting a little hungry

Time to load our Delta flight from NC to NY
The airplane was small and most carry on luggage had to be stored below the airplane

The flight from NC to New York was about 90 minutes (maybe less).  The Delta airplane was small - two seats - an aisle - and two more seats.  We arrived in New York about 2:30pm and had a 5-hour-layover before our flight from NY to Tel-Aviv at 8:50pm.  There were 20 of us on the Highway To Zion Sukkot trip to Israel, but only 17 of us were flying Delta.  We had time for lunch and some airport shopping.

Duke & Myrl wait for the 8:50pm flight to Tel Aviv

The Delta airplane from NY to Tel-Aviv was much larger.  There was 3 seat on one side of the plane - an aisle - 4 seats in the middle of the plane - another aisle - and 3 seats on the right side of the plane.  The airplane held over 400 people.

Our NY to Tel-Aviv flight

We started boarding the NY plane at 7:30 after a final security check.  After about 75 people (including the 17 from NC) boarded the plane, suddenly all boarding stopped.  We were informed that there was a "strike" at the airport tower in Greece and we were no longer cleared to fly over their air space.  There was talk of an alternate flight plan - perhaps over Turkey.  Finally everything was worked out and boarding resumed about an hour later.  The plane was loaded by 9:30 and ready for take off.  We finally left NY about 10:00pm (instead of 8:50).  We had a nice dinner on the flight around Midnight that consisted of chicken & mushrooms in marinara with rice, a small salad, bread, cake and a drink.

Waiting on the large Israel-bound airplane while a new flight plan is cleared

Notice the 3 seats on the left- small aisle - 4 seats in the middle - small aisle - 3 seats on the right of the airplane

Joyce, Rita and Melissa pose for a photo what we wait on the plane

The flight to Israel was 5780 miles and was about 10 hours long.  This flight was the most difficult part of the trip.  I (Curtis) slept pretty good but most others did not.

We had breakfast on the airplane about 6:00am which consisted of Orange Juice, a "Hot Pocket" of some style, and cheese and crackers.
